Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for several hours when numerous of them floated into the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the frontier with Belarus.

A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that such operations become not financially viable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
